Week 1: New Media Influence by Afeedatul Aisyah Ahmad

As I’ve been reading the articles on new media influences, there is this article that really gauges my attention. In this article, writer is very genuinely expressing his thought on the influences of the new media towards mass communications and media changes. He highlighted few points such as the influences on journalism and also public relations. As for journalism, or newspaper companies, the convergence of the technologies are definitely effecting the profits and also the sales revenue for them as the people who used to subscribe or read newspapers every morning are changing to online newspapers as they can also comments and share opinions with the others. This will also gain interest for those who are not reading newspapers as online newspapers are fast and also involving two way communications as they will get a feedback compares to read newspaper alone.
As for Public Relations, writer also highlighted how the new media affects the persuasion and PR models of communications. The traditional ways such as press releases and other PR method are no longer much needed. This is because, most of the giant corporations are stepping one step ahead where they are joining the community power of the new media. For example, the social network site such as facebook and twitter. As public Relations practitioners, the positions of controlling the society are now changing rapidly. The job scopes are now less traditional and also less powerful. The society are now showing a huge interest of the media convergence, and to be succeed, the corporations have to fulfill their demand to stay on track and maintain reputations.
These are the communications model shown in this article. The changes and differences are getting wider and wider every day. This is the model of influence that is used to be use by PR in making announcements which is very straightforward.

This table is the new style or models that need to be used nowadays by PR professionals.

I agreed with your writing that the changes of new media conveyance such as social networking, twitter and etc are widely use nowadays and become a “roller coaster ride” of PR. The Giants make profit and raise attention with less capital/effort but the expected result is excellent. Technology allows this instant communication and seems to encourage our “need-to-know” mentality. As human being, we need to know because we are survivors of any threats even the threats may exist thousands of miles away.

This media have some pros and cons. It’s proven that people or project can easily get hurt and relationship can be harmed. Our world can suffer by becoming a victim to poor rational thought in cases of fear or the negative effects of media driven anxiety. Some people can handle this gracefully, some people can thrive in this environment but most of us are just victims to our technology.

As a conclusion, for those who use this media should focus on the outcome effects to others.

p/s: no offense! You just point a good issue to discuss.
