The smartphones in our pockets are far more powerful than the desktop computers we dreamed of in the 1980s. This year they are outselling PCs – and soon they could replace our wallets as well. According to Silicon Republic, Herlihy told Digital Landscapes conference attendees that: "In three years time, desktops will be irrelevant. In Japan, most research is done today on smartphones, not PCs."
For a smartphones to replace PCs, they would have to take on all the features of a PC. They need to input and edit text as easily as a PC, create spreadsheets as easily as a PC, edit pictures and presentations as easily as a PC, and manage large databases as easily as a PC. To do that in a small mobile device, you need a color folding screen, either a full-size keyboard or perfect voice recognition, a pointing device a heck of a lot more sophisticated than a five-way rocker, enormous amounts of storage, and a fast processor.
If someone were to name the two popular leaders of the smartphone industry, the answers surely would be informed. BlackBerry and Apple have been undisputed pioneers of this industry and the excellence of technology used in their phones is simply unmatchable. As we generally say, the phones simply make us go Wow! In today’s review, we take a comprehensive look at the BlackBerry Bold 9780 and the Apple iPhone 4 and compare them based on what we like and what we don’t in either of the phones.
Design is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of any Apple product and the iPhone 4 does not fail us there. With a sleek body dimension of 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3 mm, the phone was love at first sight for us. Of course, the BlackBerry also has stylish dimensions but the thickness factor matters when it comes to smartphones and BlackBerry does not seem to understand that. Measuring 109 x 60 x 14 mm, this device weighs 122g which is pretty light compared to the slightly heavier 137g. The front of the iPhone has a LED backlit TFT capacitive touchscreen effervescing with 16M colors and measuring 3.5”. The BlackBerry on the other hand chose to put a smaller TFT screen of 2.44” and incorporated a beautiful and functional QWERTY keyboard.
The phones run on trademark operating systems of their companies, namely the BlackBerry OS and the iOS. The Bold sports the best OS of all BlackBerries, i.e. the v6.0 of the BlackBerry OS. The iPhone on the other hand, sports an equally sophisticated iOS 4, the latest invention of Apple in the operating system arena. The iPhone has a faster 1GHz processor than the 624MHz compare to the BlackBerry. In addition to the faster processor, Apple also has a PowerVR GPU that ensures smooth graphical interface.
With a common of options for 2G and 3G communication networks such as GSM 850/900/1800/1900 and HSDPA 850/900/1900/2100, these phones offer flawless and crisp communication. For seamless surfing of the internet, GPRS and EDGE facilities have been incorporated onto the phones. Of course, SMS, MMS and other messaging services are present on the phones. BlackBerry is the best when it comes to e-mail and the Bold stands just another testimony to that fact. Other features such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are present in both the phones.
This is one thing we hate about Apple. Despite having awesome internal memory storage such as 16/32 GB, Jobs seems to have some problem in giving people the right to expansion through memory cards and there are no slots available consequently. BlackBerry’s internal memory is big. It has just 256 MB storage and a 512MB RAM but it allows expansion up to 32 GB. Nice of you, BlackBerry!
The phones sport equally awesome 5MP shooters that have a number of features such as autofocus, LED flash, etc. Video recording has also been enabled in the phones. The iPhone in fact offers HD video recording at 720p (30fps). Secondary camera cannot be found on the BlackBerry while one can be found on the iPhone that facilitates video calling over Wi-Fi.
The two pioneers at war again in their best turf! The BlackBerry has a standard lithium ion 1500 mAh battery and the iPhone has a 1420 mAh lithium ion battery. Both the batteries are extremely strong and we hope users should not experience any inconvenience as far as battery life is concerned.
Choose based on the quality, performance and also for the best price…
