Judge Marco Hernandez, a judge from Portland, Oregon ruled that bloggers are not journalists and they do not deserve any legal protection that legal journalists get from the local law. Any articles written by bloggers are not protected and any false information that may lead to miscommunication will be charged in court. Shield Law in Oregon protects mainstream journalists only such as broadcast journalists, newspaper journalists and magazine. Writing an article anonymously does not make the news any credible than mainstream journalists.
Meanwhile, HuffingtonPost and AOL have violated the credibility of journalism in another way as they use teenagers to write articles. They violated the credibility, as they would want to gain support from parents and teachers saying that it is a new medium for kids to show their talent in journalistic writing. Using underage as a army to outcast their voice without being sentenced in court is just an unacceptable action to exploiting writers without paying them for their article writing. Their action of doing so has made a lot questions popped up in readers’ mind, as is this a child labor or lowering the credibility of an article?
Blogs has yet to be a credible source to gain any knowledge or information, as some blogs are just written by people spreading rumors and in some cases, false information. Either way, there are bloggers out there who are real journalist in real life as they feel that blogging is the right medium for them to write articles without any gatekeepers being their barrier to publish the story. They are their own gatekeeper.
