A Journal Review on ICT, the New Media (Internet) and Development: Malaysian Experience

New media technology has grown up aggressively nowadays. Malaysia is one of the country which develop well and the used of internet has increase. The government in Malaysia has worked progressively with used of internet. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is now the focus to go ahead Malaysia in the new era of globalization and knowledge and consequently development. The used of traditional media in Malaysia is prominent, it shown when the establishment of National News Agency (BERNAMA) in 1968, has became the bridge between the government and the Press, and in process got a clearer understanding of the government.
The Malaysian Government has understanding that the new media and ICT can give a lot of benefit and the work will become faster and everything is possible to be maximized. To achieve the status of a local Information Technology (IT) hub, the government has put in place the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) covering an area of 15 kilometres wide and 50 kilometres long which covering Kuala Lumpur City Center (KLCC) in the north and the new KL International Airport (KLIA) in the south. Putrajaya has known as the ‘intelligent city’ and Cyberjaya is full of sophisticated multimedia technology. These two cities have developed a lot and the use of information system is new related to the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC). According to Ariff and Goh (1998), “Flagship Applications” have been identified under the MSC pilot applications. These seven pilot applications are Electronic Government, Multi-purpose Card, Smart Schools, Telemedicine, Research and Development (R&D) Cluster, Worldwide Manufacturing Webs and Borderless Marketing.
The used of internet has increase because the government has adapt it in the education area. E-government and smart school is the effort make by government to the steady growth in the PC market. Now, the student or user can just online on the related website to get information and knowledge. Organisation’s system will become more systematic and easier to access. The production in the business industry can be upgrade because the use of ICT in Malaysia and the good market can affect the economy of our country. The Internet offers different useful tools for communication, such as electronic mail, the World Wide Web, newsgroups, remote access, file transfer and text-based and voiced-based chat. All this can make the employees, top management, and public get communicate and send information which each other.
The ICT policies can help in developing of new media for user to get benefits. The Malaysian government has so far made step in employing ICT for improvement and with MSC the infrastructural support for ICT uptake has been established. The government and the private sector must take note to make an effort to develop the internet use at the rural area of Malaysia. There are still a lot of villages in Malaysia that lack of internet. Hope that in the year of 2020 Malaysia will become the first world country which standard with the other development country.
